No one, absolutely no one, provides service like you do!"

IDENTITY THEFT INCREASED 50% SINCE LAST YEAR! ARE YOU PROTECTED? - May 2009

What is Identity Theft?  Identity theft is the fraudulent use of the identity of another person to establish credit accounts, secure loans, enter into contracts, or commit other crimes.  Did you know?
  • 8.3 million Americans were the victims of Identity Theft in 2005, and the number is anticipated to be near 15 million in 2009?
  • The typical loss was $500, with 10% of consumers losing $6,000 or more?
  • Victims of Identity Theft are often left unable to use existing credit or obtain new loans, harassed by debt collectors, are subjects of criminal investigations, and in some instances arrested?

How can you protect yourself this summer and throughout the year?

  • Keep the amount of personal information in your wallet or purse to a bare minimum.  Avoid carrying additional credit cards, your social security card, or passport unless absolutely necessary.
  • Guard your credit card when making purchases.  Shield your hand when using ATM machines or making long distance phone calls with phone cards.
  • Always take credit card and ATM receipts.  Do not throw them away in public trash containers, or leave them in your shopping bag where they can easily fall out or be stolen.
  • Proceed with caution when shopping online.  Make sure you are buying from a reputable retailer with a secure network.
  • Carefully monitor your bank and credit card statements to verify all transactions are accurate.  If you suspect a problem, contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
  • Shred any documents containing personal information such as credit card numbers, bank statements, and charge receipts before disposing of them.
  • Place passwords on your credit card, bank, and phone accounts.  Avoid simple or easy to decipher passwords.
  • Do not give your personal information on the phone, through the mail, or over the internet unless you a sure of who you are dealing with and that they have a secure line.

Safeco and Travelers Insurance homeowner and business owner policies include Identity Theft coverage as part of their policies.  Please contact our office if you have any questions.
