Staying Insured after Job Loss – February 2009
2008 and 2009 have been very difficult years economically for many of our clients. Unfortunately, some have lost their jobs. Many companies offer terminated employees COBRA Insurance. Cobra allows displaced employees to purchase their existing company health insurance plan for up to eighteen months. This is often very expensive. Did you know?
- In California, individuals receive an average monthly unemployment benefit of $1,322 and pay an average monthly payment of $380, which is 29% of their jobless benefits?
- Families receive the same unemployment benefit of $1,322 and pay an average monthly payment of $1,079, which is 82% of their jobless benefits?
Unfortunately, for many there are only three alternatives: 1) pay the expensive premiums, 2) go without health insurance until a new job is found, or 3) hope to be added onto their spouses’ workplace health insurance policy.
There is another alternative. We have often found our clients’ better value propositions in the individual marketplace. The policies are medically underwritten, so it helps if the applicants are in good health. Here are three examples of clients we have helped:
- A 41 year old client who is married with two children. When he was laid off, his company offered him family COBRA coverage at approximately $1,000 per month. We found him a family plan with Aetna that saved him over 50% as the premium was $472 per month.
- A 38 year old client who is married with two children. When he was laid off, his company offered him family COBRA coverage at approximately $1,100 per month. We found him a family plan with Blue Cross for $497 per month.
- A single female client who is 30 years old. When she left her job she did not accept COBRA as it was approximately $400 per month. We found her an individual plan with Blue Shield for $146 per month.
