Are You Ready if an Earthquake Hit Today?
- April 2010

The recent earthquakes in Chile
and Haiti serve as a powerful
reminder – that California residents
should be prepared for the worst.
The experts say there is a 99%
likelihood that the state will be
hit with a major earthquake during
the next 3 decade. Many experts
think that Southern California is
statistically due literally any day to
suffer a major earthquake.
Northern California had a 6.5 earthquake on January 9. Just during the month of March (thru March 18), the following earthquakes struck Southern California:
- March 9 – San Diego, 4.0
- March 13 – Julian, 4.2
- March 15 – The Geysers, 3.0
- March 16 – Los Angeles, Pico Rivera, 4.4
- March 17 – Baja, 4.0
- March 18 – Ferndale, 3.3
Although Earthquake insurance is not for everyone, one rule of thumb says that the more equity you have in your home, in other words, the less you owe the bank, the more you are a candidate for quake insurance.
Skeptics say the federal government will bail out homeowners if a major earthquake strikes, so what is the point of paying premiums? Our recommendation is that you should not gamble on Uncle Sam to come to the rescue. Everyone should be prepared for the unexpected. This includes having adequate earthquake insurance.
