No one, absolutely no one, provides service like you do!"

EMPLOYEE THEFT IS SOARING!  IS YOUR BUSINESS PROTECTED? - April 2009

The economic downturn we are experiencing has lead to increases in employee theft.  Did you know?

  • The FBI considers employee theft the fastest growing crime in the country?
  • The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates 75% of employees steal from their employers, and most do repeatedly?
  • The American Society of Employers estimates 20% of every dollar earned by a U.S. company is lost to employee theft?  75% is never detected?
  • One third of all corporate bankruptcies are directly caused by employee theft?  Businesses with less than 100 employees are the most vulnerable?

What causes employees to steal?

  • Alcohol, drug, or gambling addictions.
  • Living beyond their income, i.e., “keeping up with the Joneses”.
  • A family illness that generates large medical bills.
  • College tuition for children.
  • Feeling they “are owed it” due to perceived under compensation and lack of recognition.

What can you do to minimize your chances of experiencing employee theft?

  • Segregate financial duties such as check writing and balancing bank statements.  Do not to put one employee in charge of any one phase of administration where accounts receivable and accounts payable are involved.  Make countersignature of checks required so more than one person must sign.
  • Spot-checks, audits, and inventories should be made at frequent intervals, and on a surprise basis, with the results cross compared to corroborate or prove the findings in error.
  • Implement periodic revisions of the auditing and security measures to avoid a pattern that can be easily detected and taken advantage of by employees.
  • Conduct background checks with credit reports on all prospective new employees.  Train employees how to recognize and report fraud.
  • Keep as many files and materials as possible under lock and key.  Distribute keys to as few personnel as possible.
  • Add new security steps with passwords for all electronic activities, especially involving bank accounts and the internet.

Many of the insurance companies we represent offer employee dishonesty coverage as an optional policy coverage item.  Please contact Michael Quigley if you would like to review your existing policy limits.
