DON'T LOWER INSURANCE TO REFLECT LOWER HOME VALUES- August 2009
There are a number of steps a homeowner can take to lower the cost of property insurance, but reducing the amount of coverage to match today’s lower market values is not one of them. Why? |
 |
- It can cost as much as 30% more to rebuild a house than to build a new one. This is due to the demolition and removal costs of damaged property, and the need to work around existing landscaping, power lines, and other structures.
- During the last year, home repair costs increased 4% due to the increase in the cost of materials.
- Market value is influenced by factors that are unrelated to the cost to rebuild: the local tax base, the quality of schools, and the proximity to mass transit.
What are some ways you can lower your homeowner property insurance without running the risk of becoming underinsured?
- Raise your deductible . By increasing your deductible from $250 to $500, you could save as much as 12%. By increasing your deductible to $1,000 or $2,500, you could save as much as 25% and 30% respectively.
- Don’t file minor claims that aren’t much more than your deductible. This can lead to increases in your premium. Use your coverage to protect you from losses from which you cannot recover on your own.
- Bundle your policies with one agent. Many insurance companies offer discounts to clients who have more than one policy with them.
We encourage you to contact our office so we can together evaluate all your insurance to see where we can save you some money.
